Coronavirus disproportionately devastated Black Americans and hit very close to home for my family; in the New York Times, I talk about how the toll of the pandemic follows a legacy that left certain communities particularly vulnerable.

We know what makes our communities safe, we know that centuries of a police-only approach have not served us. As some at City Hall doubled down on failed policies, a few of my colleagues and I created a solution.
